The Importance of Exfoliating for Skin Heath
Seasonal Skincare
Posted on October 18, 2018
The change between seasons is always a tricky time for your skin. While we relish the warmer weather our skin needs a little extra help adjusting. Coming out of winter our skin can be dull, lackluster and a little freaked out and as we start to use more sunscreen to enjoy spring a good exfoliation is needed to keep your skin dewy and fresh.
Why exfoliate?
– Help with skin cell turnover: as you age your skin’s ability to turnover on its own reduces
– Remove dead skin cells to reveal healthier skin
– Clean out pores: removes dead skin cells and heavy product residue such as suncreen which can contribute to acne and blackheads
Types of exfoliators
Physical – physical exfoliators remove flaky skin, dirt and larger impurities from the surface
Enzymatic – enzymatic exfoliators use fermented fruit extracts to deep clean pores, giving the skin a finer polish.
Here are a few of our favorite exfoliations:
Nuori Supreme Polishing Treatment – this formulation is made up of two separate components a physical and an enzymatic exfoliator. The physical exfoliator contains rice powder and jojoba beads to slough off dead skin while the fermented cherry, pomegranate and radish root extracts act as an enzymatic polish that deep cleanses and leaves the skin with a dewy glow. The Supreme Polishing Treatment is great for those who want a deep exfoliation.
OSEA Vitamin C Probiotic Polish – reduces pigmentation with the pure vitamin c, probiotic and mineral-rich seaweed extract formulation. This polish uses a combination of fermented pomegranate, rice and bamboo powders to reveal a fresh layer of brightened skin. The Vitamin C Probiotic Polish works well for those who need a little bit of help to brighten dull or pigmented skin.
May Lindstrom Clean Dirt – this clay based exfoliator uses the power of healing salts, vitamin c and spices to cleanse and gently exfoliate the the skin, cleansing the pores of impurities and brightening the new layer of skin beneath. The Clean Dirt is a great all rounder with a focus on healing and stimulating blood flow to the surface layers of the skin.
Odacité Jojoba Beads Exfoliant – this exfoliator uses biodegradable jojoba beads in a base of beautiful oils such as jojoba wax, coconut oils, olive oils and aloe vera to hydrate and resurface your skin leaving it hydrated and fresh. The Jojoba Beads Exfoliant works well for inflamed or dehydrated skin as the oils hydrate while gently revealing a new layer of skin.
Exfoliation Do’s and Don’ts
As you work to perfect your exfoliation routine, consider these few tips to ensure you do so safely and effectively.
Less is more. Exfoliating once or twice a week is sufficient.
If you’re going to dry brush, use soft, natural bristles. It’s easy to brush too hard, so make sure the bristles are pliable and brush lightly.
The more aggressive the method, the less it needs to be done. Aggressive methods aren’t our preferred way to exfoliate, but if you go for it, space treatments out to avoid harming your barrier.
