Hyaluronic acid, what you really need to know.
You've probably heard about hyaluronic acid by now and about all the wonderful things it can do for your skin, it's all true. Hyaluronic acid holds 1000 times its weight in water, increases collagen production, reduces fine lines, helps repair tissue and UV damage and is involved in wound healing and protection against free radicals. However, not all hyaluronic acids have an equal effect on the skin, unlike many products in both green and conventional skincare it is not the strength that counts but the size.
Lets get technical...
Hyaluronic acid sits between collagen fibrils and elastin in the basal layer of the epidermis providing structure and firmness to the skin. The molecule binds water and pulls it in to the skin providing deep levels of hydration. Hyaluronic acid has a variant called sodium hyaluronate which comes in either a medium or small molecular weight. Let me decode this for you, there are three different types of hyaluronic acid, three different sizes. The smallest, or low molecular weight, is absorbed deeply into the skin helping to improve hydration levels deep within the skin. The medium size molecule improves hydration in the middle layers of the skin and you guessed it the large size molecule sits on the surface of the skin to improve the surface hydration levels. That's why it's so important to know which type of hyaluronic acid is in your skincare. If it only contains the large molecule hyaluronic acid then this will pull moisture out of the lower layers of the skin to the surface, making the skin look plump and hydrated but leaving you dehydrated and reliant on the product. The minute you stop using the product your skin will feel dry and tight as all the deeper moisture levels have been zapped.
But why is it important...
Well, one third of the hyaluronic acid in the skin is turned over each day and as you age this process becomes less efficient and the hyaluronic acid levels in the skin begin to diminish, this leaves the skin dry and less firm. The best way to improve hyaluronic acid levels in the skin is to introduce hyaluronic through your products or stimulate its production by using a low strength retinol such as the Pestal and Mortar Superstar serum. Being a natural component of the skin, hyaluronic is safe to use on any skin type and its gel based consistency allows you to bring it into any existing skincare regime.
Dry skin - it provides intense moisture and helps to improve firmness through stimulation of collagen production.
Oily/ combination skin- it helps to balance out excessive oil production and give your skin hydration without the heaviness.
Acne skin - it helps to hydrate and heal open blemishes
Sensitive skin- helps keep the skin hydrated and inflammation under control
Blackhead prone/ congested skin - skin it keeps the skin hydrated ensuring less dead skin cells clogging up your beautiful pores.
Our Hyaluronic Acid Products
All our products are either combinations of all three molecular weights or they are low molecular weight formulations allowing for deep, sustained levels of hydration, leaving you with regenerated dewy skin.
OSEA Hyaluronic Sea Serum
OSEA's Hyaluronic Sea Serum contains all three molecular weights of hyaluronic acid, allowing it to penetrate in to all layers of the skin, giving immediate visible plumping results as well as deep level hydration over time. This is combined with three types of seaweed that provide further stimulating properties as well as essential minerals and vitamins. The three seaweed extratcs, red algae (gigartina Skittsbergii extract), Brown marine Algae (Undaria Pinnatifida extract), Brown Algae (Macrocystis Pyrifera extract) provide antioxidants, minerals and vitamins such as B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12, iron, iodine, potasssium, calcium, fucoidan (a hydrating component) and fatty acids, to help with impurities, texture and irritation and helps protect skin from the harsh environment such as dry weather and air pollution. The hyaluronic acid used in OSEA's Hyaluronic Sea Serum is plant based produced through fermentation.
