The term ‘beauty sleep’ is actually a real thing. The most overlooked source of stress relief, energy preservation and self-care comes from getting our eight hours – it’s even a large contributor to calming problematic skin. A lack of sleep affects our health and wellbeing on so many levels, particularly impairing our body’s ability to detoxify, regenerate and to heal.
Sleep is food for your brain, body and skin – essential nourishment for these parts to function at their optimum. Obvious signs you’re not getting enough sleep could manifest into skin looking lacklustre, puffy and loses its collagen and elasticity. Sleep deprivation stimulates the hormonal release of cortisol (our stress hormone) which encourages inflammatory responses in conditions like acne, psoriasis, and eczema.
The difficulty and drawback in sinking into REM? Usually, our lifestyles. Our day-to-day proves to overstimulate our headspace, clouding our thoughts and blurring the boundaries between work and home. Often, we attempt to balance everything in our lives to the detriment of our time to rest before sleep – essential to preparing for a good nights rest.
Work toward regulating your ‘sleep and wake’ cycle with our guide you toward sounder sleep:
Regulate your sleep pattern
Syncing your clock to the natural light and dark cycles of the earth allows your body to identify when it’s time to wake and when it’s time to rest. Rituals like resting a weighted, lightly-scented eye pillow 10-15 minutes before sleep can help get into the rhythm.
Minimise your screen time
Dim lighting and darkness stimulate a hormone called melatonin – the sleep hormone. You can now get glasses that block blue light from screens, sold by our friends at Oscar Wylee.
Use nutrients to aid deep sleep
Nutrients like magnesium (the sleep mineral) calm the nervous system. Our bodies churn through magnesium when we’re stressed, actively ‘dumping’ it without it being used for good. Magnesium helps your brain produce neurotransmitters that induce sleep through the release of melatonin and reduces stress throughout the body. Look for Magnesium oil for daily, targeted use to relax muscles and increase absorption through the skin. Magnesium bath salts are commonly used as intense magnesium diffusions as it’s best absorbed into the skin through water. Add half a sachet to a warm bath to soak for at least 20 minutes.
Drinking nutrients before sleep is a great way to aid digestive tracts before your organs restore overnight. Natural sedatives, nervous system soothers and anxiety relievers such as chamomile, lemon balm, passionflower and valerian are optimum choices in preparing for sleep. The Beauty Chef’s SLEEP Inner Beauty Powder goes one step further in containing sour cherry, naturally rich in melatonin. WellCo Sleep Welle Fortified Calming Tea has a natural blend of infused herbs packaged into a teabag for ease.
Diffuse calming scents in your space
Diffusing or burning essential oils that are known to improve and keep cortisol levels in check, while restoring calm to the nervous system–ultimate for a good night’s sleep. Diffusing essential oils through the Vitruvi Stone Diffuser allows for 7-hour diffusion of your perfected sleep blend to guide you to sleep every night. Alternatively, burning essential oils through the Addition Studio Synergy Oil Diffuser 1-hour prior to sleep will relax the body and mind in preparation before bed.
Recommended essential oils for calming, relaxing and encouraging rest are lavender, ylang ylang, clary sage, and sweet orange. Blend your own favourite mix or add 10 drops of Vitruvi Quiet to reset at home or Dusk to settle in for the night.
Choose your skincare wisely
The beauty of natural skincare is that many formulas that aim to calm inflammation, reduce redness or combat sensitivities use ingredients targeted to soothe any anxieties related to inflaming skin conditions. Two common ingredients that have this little extra TLC are Blue Chamomile (also known as Blue Tansy) and Orange Blossom. By incorporating a moisturising balm with one or both of these ingredients, the liberation of stress to the nervous system is just as potent as the boost to your skin’s complexion, strength and tone. Try Leahlani’s Bless Beauty Balm or May Lindstrom’s Blue Cocoon for impeccable results.
